India

Namaz first — and with it, peace.

Awwab is a free, gentle prayer companion for iPhone, Apple Watch and Android: for more peace, a content heart, and the joy of returning to God. It comes with Karachi-method timings, Hanafi or Shafi'i Asr, and a Qibla compass. And if you'd like a little help staying present, the apps you choose rest with you at namaz time — and come back the moment you've prayed.

Namaz timings

Set up for India in two steps

In Settings, choose Univ. of Islamic Sciences (Karachi) — the app shows “Pakistan, India” under it. Many masjid timetables in India use the same angles: Fajr and Isha when the sun is 18° below the horizon. Awwab starts on the Egyptian method, so change it once and every time follows.

Then set your madhab for Asr. Across much of India the Hanafi school is followed: choose Hanafi and Asr begins when a shadow is twice an object's height. In Kerala, coastal Karnataka, the Konkan and parts of Tamil Nadu, many follow the Shafi'i school: keep the standard Asr, when a shadow equals the object's height.

Times are calculated on your phone from your location, from Srinagar to Kozhikode, and work without an internet connection. Local timetables often add a few minutes of caution (ihtiyat) to some times. Awwab shows the calculated times with no extra minutes and has no manual adjustment yet, so for sehri, follow your local timetable.

Azan and jama'at

The lock starts with the prayer time, not the jama'at

Most masjids in India pray the jama'at at a fixed time some minutes after the azan. Awwab's lock begins when the prayer time begins. If you pray later with the jama'at, your chosen apps simply wait until you've prayed and marked it — or a short snooze opens them for the time you set, from 1 to 30 minutes.

The Shield (optional)

Want a little help staying present?

Completely optional. Awwab calls it the Shield: when it's time to pray, the apps you choose rest with you — and come back the moment you've prayed.

  1. Choose the apps that can wait

Pick them through Apple's Screen Time. The choice stays on your phone, and Awwab never sees which apps they are.

  2. They rest while you pray

When a prayer time begins, those apps lock. Open one and you see a verse of the Qur'an and a way to your prayer, not a harsh “Blocked”.

  3. Pray, and they come back

Mark the prayer as prayed and everything opens. If you truly need an app first, a short snooze lifts the lock for a few minutes.

Ramadan and Eid

The moon and the dates

In India, Ramadan and Eid are announced after the moon is sighted, and the date can differ from one region to another; Kerala, for example, often begins a day before the north. Awwab's occasion reminders follow the Umm al-Qura calendar used in Saudi Arabia, which is often a day ahead. Treat them as an early heads-up, and go by your local announcement for fasting and Eid.

Free and private

No paywall, no ads, no tracking

Every feature is free. There is an optional supporter subscription for people who want to help the work continue; it unlocks nothing extra.

There is no account and no sign-in. The app shows no ads and has no analytics or tracking. Your prayers and settings live in your own private iCloud, and we never receive them.

Awwab is on the App Store for iPhone and Apple Watch, and on Google Play for Android.

Questions

Is Awwab free in India?

Yes. Every feature is free and the app has no ads. An optional supporter subscription exists for people who want to support the work; it unlocks nothing.

Which prayer-time method should I choose in India?

Choose Univ. of Islamic Sciences (Karachi) in Settings; the app shows “Pakistan, India” under it. Awwab starts on the Egyptian method, so this is a one-time change.

Hanafi or Shafi'i Asr?

Follow the school you pray by. Choose Hanafi in Settings for the later Asr (a shadow twice an object's height); keep the standard Asr for the Shafi'i time, common in Kerala and along the west coast. Only Asr changes.

Does the lock start at the azan or at the jama'at time?

At the start of the prayer time. If your masjid's jama'at is later, the apps you chose wait until you've prayed and marked it, or you can snooze the lock for 1 to 30 minutes.

Will Ramadan and Eid match the announcement where I live?

Not always. Awwab's reminders follow the Umm al-Qura calendar, which is often a day ahead of India, and Indian regions can differ from each other. Go by your local announcement.

Is the app in Hindi or Urdu?

Awwab is in Urdu, but not yet in Hindi. It is in 14 languages in all, and you can change the language at any time in Settings → Language. You can read this page in Urdu.

Does it work without the internet?

Yes. Prayer times and the Qibla are calculated on your phone, so they work offline.

Do I have to allow Screen Time?

Only for the lock. It is built on Apple's Screen Time, which you allow once. You can skip it during setup, and everything else in the app works without it. The list of apps you choose stays on your phone.

Is there an Android version?

Yes. Awwab is on Google Play for Android, and on the App Store for iPhone and Apple Watch.
