Islam in Spain

From al-Andalus to today

For almost eight centuries, from 711 to the fall of Granada in 1492, much of the peninsula was al-Andalus, and its great buildings, from the Mosque of Córdoba to the Alhambra in Granada, still stand.

According to the demographic study of the Union of Islamic Communities of Spain (UCIDE), the Muslim population of Spain is about 2.5 million today, roughly one resident in twenty. Almost half are Spanish citizens, and the largest group of foreign nationals comes from Morocco. The Islamic Commission of Spain represents the communities before the state under the 1992 Cooperation Agreement.

Prayer times

Prayer times in Spain: what to choose

Spain has no single national prayer timetable: each mosque keeps its own. The Islamic Cultural Centre of Madrid publishes times that match the Muslim World League method (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°) within a couple of minutes, and Awwab has it. Choose it once in Settings: Awwab starts on the Egyptian method and does not switch by country.

Then compare it with your mosque's adhan for a few days:

  • Fajr: if your mosque calls it earlier, as timetables that follow Morocco's method (Fajr at 19°) do, go back to Egyptian General Authority (19.5°). It puts Fajr about 7 to 9 minutes earlier in winter and spring, and up to 19 minutes earlier in June in the north.
  • Asr: choose your madhab in Settings. Maliki, Shafi'i and Hanbali give the earlier time; Hanafi puts Asr about 35 minutes later in December and over an hour later in June.
  • Maghrib is calculated at sunset. Many mosques call it a few minutes later, so the lock can start a little before the adhan.
  • Jumu'ah: on Fridays the app shows Jumu'ah in place of Dhuhr.

Times are calculated on your phone for exactly where you are, from Girona to the Canary Islands, and work offline. Manual minute adjustments are not in the app yet, so when the app and your mosque differ, pray with your mosque.

Spain's late sun

Why Dhuhr comes after two

Mainland Spain keeps Central European Time although most of it lies west of Greenwich, so the sun runs late on the clock. In June, Dhuhr begins around 14:17 in Madrid and 14:35 in A Coruña, Maghrib comes after 21:45, and Isha falls around 23:45 in Madrid and just after midnight in Bilbao and A Coruña. In December, Dhuhr is around 13:13 in Madrid.

The Canary Islands are an hour behind the mainland. Awwab follows the sun where you are, so none of this needs a setting, and the times stay right when you travel between the peninsula, the islands, Ceuta and Melilla.

Ramadan and Eid

Dates, and time for prayer at work

Awwab reminds you of Ramadan, the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah, both Eids, Ashura and the White Days. These dates follow the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar.

In Spain, UCIDE publishes a provisional calendar in advance, and the Islamic Commission of Spain makes the official announcement. The two calendars can differ: in 2026, UCIDE's calendar began Ramadan on 19 February, a day after the Umm al-Qura calendar, while both Eids fell on the same days. For fasting and Eid, follow the official announcement or your mosque. The five daily prayer times are not affected.

Under the 1992 Cooperation Agreement (Law 26/1992), Muslim employees may ask, by agreement with their employer, for Friday afternoons free from 13:30 to 16:30 and, in Ramadan, to finish work an hour before sunset, making up the hours later.

The Shield (optional)

Want a little help staying present?

Completely optional. Awwab calls it the Shield: when it's time to pray, the apps you choose rest with you — and come back the moment you've prayed.

  1. Choose the apps that can wait

Pick them through Apple's Screen Time. The choice stays on your phone, and Awwab never sees which apps they are.

  2. They rest while you pray

When a prayer begins, those apps lock. Open one and you see a verse of the Qur'an and a way to your prayer, not a harsh “Blocked”.

  3. Pray, and they come back

Mark the prayer as prayed and everything opens. If you truly need an app first, a short snooze lifts the lock for the time you set, from 1 to 30 minutes.

Questions

Is Awwab free in Spain?

Yes. Every feature is free and the app has no ads. An optional supporter subscription exists for people who want to support the work; it unlocks nothing.

Which prayer-time method should I choose in Spain?

Muslim World League, chosen once in Settings. There is no national timetable, so compare with your mosque for a few days. If your mosque's Fajr is earlier, as in timetables that follow Morocco's method, the Egyptian method, the one Awwab starts on, puts it earlier.

Why is Dhuhr so late in Spain?

Because mainland Spain keeps Central European Time while lying mostly west of Greenwich. Solar noon, and so Dhuhr, comes after 13:00 in winter and after 14:00 in summer. Awwab calculates from where you are, so its times already account for it.

When is Ramadan in 2027?

By the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar, Ramadan 1448 begins around 8 February 2027, Eid al-Fitr falls around 9 March and Eid al-Adha around 16 May 2027. In Spain the Islamic Commission of Spain announces the dates, and they can differ by a day.

Can I add or subtract minutes from a prayer time?

Not yet. Manual minute adjustments are not in the app today, so choose the closest method and follow your mosque when they differ.

Is the app in Spanish?

Yes. Awwab is in Spanish, as well as in English, Arabic and 11 other languages. It starts in your phone's language; you can change it at any time in Settings → Language.

Does it work without the internet?

Yes. Prayer times and the Qibla are calculated on your phone, so they work offline.

Do I have to allow Screen Time?

Only for the lock. It is built on Apple's Screen Time, which you allow once. You can skip it during setup, and everything else in the app works without it. The list of apps you choose stays on your phone.

Is there an Android version?

Yes. Awwab is on Google Play for Android, and on the App Store for iPhone and Apple Watch.
