Islam in Argentina
A community that came from Syria and Lebanon
Muslim immigrants from Syria and Lebanon began arriving at the end of the nineteenth century and settled across the country, from the province of Buenos Aires to Tucumán, Mendoza and Córdoba. In Buenos Aires they founded their first religious association in 1931, the forerunner of today's Islamic Center, and the King Fahd Islamic Cultural Centre opened in Palermo in 2000.
Estimates of the community's size vary widely. The Islamic Center puts it at 800,000 to a million, while a 2019 CONICET survey put its 'other religions' group, which includes Islam and Judaism, at 1.2% of the population.
Prayer times
Prayer times in Argentina: what to choose
Argentina has no national prayer timetable: each mosque keeps its own. A good place to start is the Muslim World League method (Fajr 18°, Isha 17°), which Awwab has. Choose it once in Settings: Awwab starts on the Egyptian method and does not switch by country.
Then compare it with your mosque's adhan for a few days:
- Fajr: if your mosque calls it earlier, go back to Egyptian General Authority (19.5°), which puts Fajr about 6 to 12 minutes earlier, most in summer.
- Asr: choose your madhab in Settings. Hanafi puts Asr about 30 to 40 minutes later in June and over an hour later in December; every other choice gives the earlier time.
- Maghrib is calculated at sunset. Many mosques call it a few minutes later, so the lock can start a little before the adhan.
- Jumu'ah: on Fridays the app shows Jumu'ah in place of Dhuhr.
Times are calculated on your phone for exactly where you are and work offline. Manual minute adjustments are not in the app yet, so when the app and your mosque differ, pray with your mosque.
Late sun, far south
Dhuhr after one, and summer nights in Patagonia
Argentina keeps UTC−3 all year, although most of the country lies further west, so the sun runs late on the clock. Around 21 December, Dhuhr begins at about 12:52 in Buenos Aires and 13:34 in Mendoza, and Maghrib comes after 20:00, and after 22:00 in Ushuaia.
South of about 48.5°, in southern Santa Cruz and Tierra del Fuego, the summer sky never gets dark enough for the usual Fajr and Isha angles in the weeks around the December solstice: in Ushuaia from about mid-November to late January, in Río Gallegos from late November to mid-January. On those nights Awwab uses the seventh of the night: Isha comes one seventh of the night after Maghrib, and Fajr one seventh of the night before sunrise. In Ushuaia around 21 December, that puts Isha at about 23:09 and Fajr at about 03:54; in Río Gallegos, at about 22:58 and 04:12. On every other night, Awwab shows the real dawn and nightfall for your method, however late or early they come. If your community follows another rule for these nights, follow it.
Ramadan and Eid
Fasting at the end of summer
Awwab reminds you of Ramadan, the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, the Day of Arafah, both Eids, Ashura and the White Days. These dates follow the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar. For the start of Ramadan and the day of Eid, follow the announcement your community follows; it can differ from the app by a day.
Ramadan 1448 begins in February 2027, when the days are still long: on its first day, the fast runs from about 04:48 to 19:54 in Buenos Aires, and from about 03:10 to 21:22 in Ushuaia.
Under Law 27,399 (2017), the Islamic New Year, the day after the end of the fast (Eid al-Fitr) and Eid al-Adha are non-working days for Muslims, who keep their pay if they do not work those days.

The Shield (optional)
Want a little help staying present?
Completely optional. Awwab calls it the Shield: when it's time to pray, the apps you choose rest with you — and come back the moment you've prayed.
Choose the apps that can wait
Pick them through Apple's Screen Time. The choice stays on your phone, and Awwab never sees which apps they are.
They rest while you pray
When a prayer begins, those apps lock. Open one and you see a verse of the Qur'an and a way to your prayer, not a harsh “Blocked”.
Pray, and they come back
Mark the prayer as prayed and everything opens. If you truly need an app first, a short snooze lifts the lock for the time you set, from 1 to 30 minutes.

Questions
Is Awwab free in Argentina?
Yes. Every feature is free and the app has no ads. An optional supporter subscription exists for people who want to support the work; it unlocks nothing.
Which prayer-time method should I choose in Argentina?
Start with Muslim World League, chosen once in Settings. There is no national timetable, so compare with your mosque for a few days. If your mosque's Fajr is earlier, the Egyptian method, the one Awwab starts on, puts it about 6 to 12 minutes earlier.
What happens to Fajr and Isha in Ushuaia in summer?
From about mid-November to late January, the sky there never gets dark enough for the usual angles. On those nights Awwab puts Isha one seventh of the night after Maghrib and Fajr one seventh of the night before sunrise, so around 21 December Isha comes at about 23:09 and Fajr at about 03:54. On all other nights it shows the real dawn and nightfall. Follow your community if it uses another rule.
When is Ramadan in 2027?
By the calculated Umm al-Qura calendar, Ramadan 1448 begins around 8 February 2027, Eid al-Fitr falls around 9 March and Eid al-Adha around 16 May 2027. Follow your community's announcement; it can differ by a day.
Can I add or subtract minutes from a prayer time?
Not yet. Manual minute adjustments are not in the app today, so choose the closest method and follow your mosque when they differ.
Is the app in Spanish?
Yes. Awwab is in Spanish, as well as in English, Arabic and 11 other languages. It starts in your phone's language; you can change it at any time in Settings → Language.
Does it work without the internet?
Yes. Prayer times and the Qibla are calculated on your phone, so they work offline.
Do I have to allow Screen Time?
Only for the lock. It is built on Apple's Screen Time, which you allow once. You can skip it during setup, and everything else in the app works without it. The list of apps you choose stays on your phone.
Is there an Android version?
Yes. Awwab is on Google Play for Android, and on the App Store for iPhone and Apple Watch.
